Hitler and the Occult (All About History issue 58)
Hitler and the Occult was in many ways the model of the ideal All About History cover feature: it led with a subject that traditionally performs well for the magazine, but added an extra hook - and crucially it wasn’t something our competitors would feel comfortable running as a cover but fit well with our magazine’s aesthetic..
As writer I had two very careful considerations: firstly that this be credible and authoritative, as it’s a subject that is often given a risible treatment, and secondly, that I don’t shy away from the consequences. It’s easy to mock the Third Reich’s indulgence of pseudoscience, but ultimately these were drawn from the same ideology that birthed the Holocaust.
Two very important resources for this article were The Occult Roots of Nazism by Nicholas Goodrick Clarke, and Hitler's Monsters: A Supernatural History of the Third Reich by Erich Kurlander.
