A League of Their Own (Who Do You Think You Are? issue 197)
With the Rugby League World Cup 2021 – held October and November 2022 – representing a uniquely high watermark of popular attention on the code, I wanted to pay tribute to its origins, looking at the social history, the role it plays in regional identity, and the conflicts between social classes that led to Rugby League’s split from Rugby Union.
As always, the challenges of writing Who Do You Think You Are? are in showing how the grand sweep of history is felt by ordinary people. Sadly, the issue’s pagination was cut. As a result, the article had to be crammed into two fewer pages. The sub did a fantastic job in keeping the spirit of the piece intact, but some of the material on the makeup of the crowds and their riotous reputations had to be removed.
A League of Their Own appeared in Who Do You Think You Are? issue 197, priced £5.25. Find out more at whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com
