I knew nothing of my great-aunt before the margins of official records exposed a tragic tale of Edwardian gothic, yet the dark shadow of her short life must have loomed large in the lives of my immediate family. My grandfather, her youngest brother, remained in the family home at Ferry Lane with their mother long after the rest of her siblings had scattered, and my father grew up alongside her son.

But pride was relayed far more easily than shame. Perhaps the story wasn’t told at all, or if it was relegated to euphemism that children knew better than to question.
