The Battle of Loos (Defining Battles of the First World War)

The Battle of Loos (Defining Battles of the First World War)

This four page overview of the Battle of Loos (1915) involved an annotated map, which given the distinctive topography of the battlefield necessitated me getting the detail right the first time around so that the artist had no room for error.

As always with The Great War, doing a campaign justice while also making it accessible to the reader presented a challenge and I chose to move between human interest, such as the fate of John Kipling and quotes from my handsome Folio Society edition of Robert Graves’ Goodbye to All That, and the grand sweep of strategy and behind the scenes politicking. On the latter I found Nick Lloyd’s work on the subject to be invaluable.

The Battle of Loos appeared in the bookazine Defining Battles of the First World War, priced £9.99. Find out more at MyFavouriteMagazines.co.uk
