The War on Slavery (Book of the Georgians)

The War on Slavery (Book of the Georgians)

Distilling the rise and fall of the slave trade under Hanoverian dynasty into two pages of text was an epic undertaking, probably consuming more hours than a piece twice the length.

Although limited by space I wanted to do the experiences of kidnapped Africans justice by keeping them firmly in the narrative and underscoring the importance of slave revolts and the ‘Demerara Martyr’, Sam Sharpe, instead of purely white voices.

The choice of lead image was mine. As the feature was appearing in the bookazine Book of the Georgians alongside articles on art, literature and dynastic feuding, I though the implied relationship between the black and white subjects in the image would help emphasise the link between slavery and wider society.

The War on Slavery appeared in the bookazine Book of the Georgians, priced £9.99. Find out more at MyFavouriteMagazines.co.uk
